Brooklyn Museum Lantern Slides: Paris Exposition 1900

In 1900, the first curator of fine arts of the Brooklyn Museum and art and architectural historian, William Henry Goodyear and photographer and slide colorist Joseph Hawkes visited the Paris Exposition (Exposition Universelle.) Goodyear’s wife also joined him on this six week trip from New York to Paris. They traveled by sea, leaving on July 14 and returning on September 1.

The purpose of the trip, according to Head of the Brooklyn Museum Digital Collections and Services Deborah Wythe, was to see the Exposition, take pictures and upon their return present them in lectures to the people of Brooklyn. Today, the legacy of that trip is a huge collection of lantern slides, many of which have been made available to the world by the Brooklyn Museum as a part of The Commons on Flickr.

We’re in awe of these lantern slides—part architectural history, part photographic art—that take us along with with the photographer as we see exactly what he saw in Paris more than a hundred years ago.

The Paris Exposition of 1900 celebrated the accomplishments of the century just ended and sought to encourage invention, design and progress into the 20^th century. The exposition was filled with many innovations like the escalator and the world’s largest refracting telescope as well as marvelous architecture and decorative arts. One of the splendid attractions seen in the Goodyear lantern slides is the Eiffel Tower which had been built for the previous Exposition Universelle in 1889 and stands today as an instantly recognizable landmark of the City of Lights.

We recently made a marvelous discovery–Houles Paris. Do you ever wonder why you haven’t already heard of certain beautiful decorative materials and their talented creators? Such is the case with Houlès Paris, a maker of fine fabrics and trimmings. We have learned much about Houlès.

This deeply-rooted French company continues to thrive well past 80 years. It seems to us the reason for their continuing success may be the ability to combine a sense of history and an openness to a contemporary sensibility and modern materials. This is especially evident in their latest collections. Traditional designs get an update in rich contemporary colors. Modern shapes are worked into lovely new tassels and tie-backs.

A Second Look: Kirsten Dunst as Marie Antoinette

Today we’re taking another look at the role of Kirsten Dunst as Marie Antoinette. While the movie was released in 2006 we are still in love with the production and couldn’t help revisiting it and sharing.

Learning that the new film, Les Adieux à la reine (Farewell My Queen) directed by Benoit Jacquote just opened at the Berlin International Film Festival was all the incentive we needed to head straight for the image archives. We pulled stills from Marie Antoinette and photos from the gorgeous Annie Leibovitz photo shoot for Vogue to share with you. Shall we begin with our favorite? We absolutely love this first photo by Ms. Leibovitz.

Always on the lookout for lovely chairs in any style, we just discovered this pretty floral armchair. Who says traditional has to be sedate and less than exciting? This one holds its own even as it it shares the stage with a gorgeously ornate fireplace at West Virginia’s posh Greenbriar Resort.

We rediscovered Flat Vernacular today. This little company (of two designers) makes whimsical original hand-drawn, hand-printed and bespoke wallpapers.

Elle Decor is featuring a piece about Alison Eighteen, a new Manhattan restaurant who’s owner brilliantly made the decision to commission Payton Cossell Turner of Flat Vernacular to cover their walls with a custom paper that combines a classic look with contemporary elements. Of course we had to click from Elle Decor on over to the Flat Vernacular and now we’re completely smitten by the new black wallpapers we found. Last week their blog offered a sneak peak at a new colorway and now, you can see the stunning Peaks and Valleys on their website. Our favorite is the Midnight Detail shown above.
